Grammy and American Music Award nominated, multi-platnium selling recording artist, actress and philanthropist, Kelly Price, is said to be “the only vocalist to emerge in recent years who actually deserves to be compared to Aretha Franklin (Amazon).” In 1998, her debut album “Soul Of A Woman,” quickly sold double platinum spawning #1 song “Friend Of Mine.” The song catapulted the compelling Mr. Biggs series of singles by R. Kelly & Ronald Isley. She went on to release two more albums, “Mirror Mirror (2000) and “Priceless (2003, “ which reached platinum and gold status respectively.
Reared in the church, Kelly was compelled to release her debut gospel album “This Is Who I Am” which debuted as the #1 gospel album in the country in 2006. The album won the coveted Dove Award for “Urban Album of the year” and also peaked Top 10 on the R&B charts. As a philanthropist, Kelly has worked closely with the T. J. Martell Foundation and Denise Rich’s G&P Foundation for Cancer and Research to help eradicate the disease. She is set to bring authentic R&B back with the release of her fourth mainstream CD titled “Kelly” in the fall of 2010 with award-winning producer, Warren Campbell’s newly formed label, My Block Records. The debut single “Tired”, set to be released digitally this summer, promises to be this years female national anthem. Southern Soul Sampler 14 Spotlight
Margo Thunder began singing as a young child at the age of two, when most kids are barely able to speak. She sang any song she heard on the radio or television. Her mother tricked her int entering talent contests which led her to performing at the world famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York where she performed on the same night with the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
In the 70's she signed her first record deal with Capitol Records alongside greats like the Four Tops and the Righteous Brothers. Her first Album "Soul Of A Woman" got some attention and two international hits. A then unknown crooner, Luther Vandross also sang backup on the album.
In the 80's she met Wanda Perry & Leslie Jones. From day one, it was perfect harmony so the girls formed a trio. They went by the name 9.9. The trio was eventually contacted by Richard "Dimles" Fields and they went on tour as background singers for him. They signed with RCA Records but later disbanded but Margo Thunder kept singing.
Through all of her trials, Margo has returned to recording music with her latest offering entitled "R & B 101. It's back to the basics. The album highlights rhythm & blues with some gospel influences. Margo wants R&B 101 to embody the true essence of R&B.
R&B was born during slavery. This music they're calling R&B nowadays is not R&B.
A few years ago Margo was admitted to the hospital for a simple two hour procedure and didn't wake up until 10 hours later. Miraculously, she was temporarily unable to walk or speak , but she could sing ! It was a message from God that she was granted an everlasting gift and R & B 101 was born. Listen to Margo's new release "Mistreated" and you'll fall under her spell because Margo Thunder was meant to sing.
